State Road 67 in east-central Indiana: Mounds State Park, Anderson Municipal Airport, and Chesterfield

From SR 9, old SR 67 leaves SR 32 and joins SR 232. This road was SR 67 from 1926. In 1933, SR 32 was extended beyond downtown Anderson on SR 67’s route to Muncie. The road carried both designations until 1938, when an SR 67 bypass of Anderson was completed along the south side of that town. I’ll share photos from that alignment in later installments of this trip report. Tip: you can see some of it on the map below marked “Old Indiana 67.”

At some point, SR 232 was truncated at the entrance of Mounds State Park when the Anderson Municipal Airport’s main runway was extended across this road.

This is probably also when the arc of SR 238 was turned into a left turn right before the park. A dead-end stub of Old SR 238 (and Old SR 67) still remains. This photo is northbound from the end of the stub.

From here, SR 232 is a fairly narrow highway with no shoulders.

SR 232 / old SR 67

It passes Mounds State Park, which got its name from American Indian burial grounds built here in ancient times.

Here’s where SR 238 ends. But the road continues as Mounds Road.

SR 232 / old SR 67

A half mile later, Mounds Road ends at this gate at the airport. When the gate is open, Mounds Road is technically continuous to where the original road’s path resumes on the other side of the airport. Mounds Road was simply rebuilt around the end of the runway.

Here’s Mounds Road going the other way from this gate.

Old SR 67 SB

On the other side of the airport, here’s Old SR 67 southbound toward the airport.

Old SR 67 SB

Here it is northbound into Chesterfield.

Old SR 67 NB

SR 67 originally turned right onto Plum Street, one block south of Main Street. When I drove through, I stopped to photograph this old sign. Since I made this trip, the sign has been removed.

Here’s Plum Street, northbound Old SR 67, from here.

Plum St., old SR 67

Plum Street merges into Main Street on the east end of Chesterfield. It’s possible that this concrete was once part of the road. Today, Plum Street is curved to meet Main Street at a T intersection. You can see Main Street, current SR 32, on the left.

From here, Old SR 67 and current SR 32 exit Madison County and enter Delaware County.

All this area is looking very nice and not packed by cars and heavy traffic. Seems like a pleasure to drive these rural roads.
