The end of a long road

Margaret’s father passed away last Saturday after a very long decline. He wasn’t ill, he was just old. Unfortunately, his last two years were spent in full-time care as he slowly lost his ability to move and speak. Until very near the end, however, he was very clearly still in there. He lit up anytime Margaret came to visit. Once in a while he managed to whisper something in response to Margaret that kept with his big personality.

Abandoned National Road and US 40

We’re sad he’s gone, of course, but also extremely relieved. His quality of life had become terrible.

Walt was devoutly Catholic. It’s a comfort to us all to know that through his faith, his next life is secure.

Visitation is today and the funeral is tomorrow. Walter Joyce was 92.

Over the last five years we lost all four of our parents, as well as our daughter-in-law and my daughter. We hope we are at the end of this long string of loss.

It is uncharted territory, but we do the best we can, and as one of my friends said, “It is usually enough.” May the joy of the life he lived carry on within Margaret and you.

My deepest sympathies to Margaret and to you. Watching a parent suffer through a long, debilitating illness is a terrible thing, and suffering it is surely worse. Please accept our prayers.
