A Yiddish traffic sign

Shul

This is one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a long time. This sign went up recently in front of Congregation Shaarey Tefilla, a synagogue on 116th Street in Carmel. “Shul” is the Yiddish word for synagogue.

If Christian churches can have official, AASHTO MUCTD-compliant Church signs supplied by the government, then by George, so should the synagogues — in the appropriate language!

Cool, if I’d seen that I would think it was a school, like Schule in German. I’ve not seen that here, we have signs for cemeteries but not for places of worship.

My understanding is that this Yiddish word is borrowed from the German, so you’re not far off.

I don’t know why you’re having trouble with the Like button. I can’t make it not work right here.

I learned the other day there’s another one of these in Carmel in front of a synagogue on 96th Street. It must be “a thing” in Carmel!
