Old State Road 67 runs right through Gosport Cemetery

Gosport Cemetery

Old State Road 67 diverges from the current highway in several places in Owen County, including a long stretch as the original highway enters Gosport in Owen County. Just west of where Old SR 67 crosses current SR 67, it passes through a cemetery.

It’s common for highways to pass by cemeteries, but I’ve seen it only once or twice before where the original alignment of a highway bisects a cemetery. Here are photos from Gosport Cemetery.

Jim, about nine years ago while working on US 41 south of Attica in Fountain Co. they discovered when US 41 was built in 1927, instead of relocating the graves they just removed the headstones and built the road over Stone Bluff Cemetery.

They have since put up roadside marker.

That’s a shocking story! Just unbelievable. How could they do that?!

I love to spend time in old cemeteries. My brother and I used to take rubbings of really old stones when we were kids. Your pics brought back some special memories.

I have never seen a highway bisecting a cemetery. It doesn’t really surprise me that in the old days they would ignore a cemetery when building a road or even building other things. Around here I have seen stories where some people have found old tombstones used as door steps on older houses.

That just boggles my mind. But I guess what’s acceptable does change with time.

It strikes me that the headstones to the left of the road look newer rhan most of the ones to the right. I wonder if the cemetery expanded after the road was downgraded?

It’s clear that the cemetery expanded at some point, but who knows when.

I have two children buried in that cemetery, from the time I served as pastor of Gosport Baptist Church from 1979 to 1985. Memories run deep in that community. As the only full-time pastor in town, I did a lot of funerals, and so spent more than the usual amount of time in the Gosport Cemetery.

Sorry to bring up that memory, but also, thank you for serving that community.
