Thursday doors: Belgravia Court, Old Louisville

Old Louisville is a neighborhood in, as you might guess, Louisville. You’ll find it just south of downtown. It’s full of late-1800s homes mostly in the Late Victorian style, with a few Italianate, Federal, Second Empire, and Richardson Romanesque homes in there for good measure.

The centerpiece of Old Louisville is St. James Court, a wide boulevard with a grassy median and a copper fountain. The centerpiece of this centerpiece, however, is Belgravia Court. It’s at the south end of St. James Court. But you can’t drive this court — you’ll have to park your car and walk. It is two rows of houses that face each other, sidewalks and a grassy median separating them. Gas streetlights line the median.

I have never been to this part of Louisville. I love these parts of the old river cities in the midwest and the proof of their prosperity in those pre-railroad times.

Old Louisville is a lovely walk on tree-lined streets. I recommend it — it was a very nice part of our weekend away.

Be still, my heart. Boy, do I love old doors, tree lined streets and courtyards. I will absolutely look up this neighborhood the next time I’m there.

I’ve been going through Louisville several times a year since 1955, but never stopped to look. Love the old doorways. Great job. Just curious — what camera did you use?

This is worth stopping for! I used my Pentax K10D DSLR with its kit 18-55 lens. It’s an older DSLR, from 2006, and it’s fairly heavy.

I’ve never seen anything like that glass awning? Canopy? Whatever you call it, it’s very cool.

It is cool. It would also be a pain to keep clean!

That’s the nice thing about cool things on other peoples houses. :)

Wow those came out great. We have family up there and I haven’t been there. I hope the disorder there didn’t cause damages to the district.

It didn’t seem to. I made these photos just a couple weeks ago.
