The Lincoln Memorial Bridge
Kodak EasyShare Z730
2009
This isn’t the usual view of this stunning bridge. Normally, it’s photographed from the Indiana side, in Vincennes. (See my photo from that side here.) Here, I shot it on the ground, on the other side of the Wabash River in Illinois.
It’s called the Lincoln Memorial Bridge because it was near this point that young Abraham Lincoln crossed into Illinois as they left their Indiana home behind. There’s a lovely memorial to this crossing on the Illinois side, not far from where I stood to photograph this bridge; see it here.

This bridge bears a strong resemblance to the 1931 WPA-constructed bridge over the Salt River in Tempe, Arizona. Google “Tempe bridge” and you’ll find many photos.
I am enjoying this series of posts!
Fascinating! Especially since this Wabash River bridge wasn’t a WPA project.
Vincennes is such a neat town. Love this perspective!
Everyone photographs this bridge from the Indiana side so I thought I’d be different.
Smart thinking! I drove across it and stopped at the Lincoln memorial before heading out a few more miles into Illinois. I don’t recall if I made anything of the bride from that side.
If you look down behind the memorial, you find this, the original alignment of US 50.
How cool! I will do that if I ever go back!
