Randolph St. in December

A couple weeks before Christmas, Margaret and I had another Chicago getaway weekend. These weekends away are good for our spirits. We stayed in a boutique hotel on Randolph Street, four blocks from the former Marshall Field’s department store and two from the annual Christkindlmarkt. It was a perfect location.

We saw the Nutcracker, put on by the Joffrey Ballet. Walking back to our hotel after the show, when we finally reached Randolph Street and Daley Plaza we were greeted by the trees all lit.

Nice, too bad no other pedestrians there to take in the sight.

The idea of voluntarily going to see the nutcracker seems odd. Because my daughter does ballet I must have seen it 8 years in a row now. On the bright side her involvement has gone from three minutes as a soldier to this year being in the snowflake dance, spanish dance and mother ginger. It’s even better when it’s your kid up there!

Nice going that you can get those getaway weekends in, gotta take care of yourselves too.

None of our kids did ballet, so this isn’t an annual thing for us! But I have kids who did orchestra and band, and there’s still something special about going to see the pros play.

Excellent shot. The scene is familiar to me as we have traditionally done some variation on that same visit annually, Jim. Sometimes we stay in a larger hotel in/near River North but this past year we stayed at Cambria which put us right on Randolph between Macy’s & Daley Plaza. It completely makes the weekend when you are right in the middle of where you plan to visit.
As a kid, when I lived in Chicago, we’d come down to Fields’ to look at the windows and scenes like the one you captured.
    Very nice

We like to stay in boutique hotels in the Loop. We were in the hotel right next to the Cadillac Palace theatre this time. I agree: it’s great to be in the thick of it all!
