From a stroll I took with my son through downtown Lafayette. Most Indiana towns of this size have lost most of their old downtown buildings; not Lafayette.

I’m curious about the lack of old buildings. Did they build newer ones, or just decide they needed too many parking lots.
Most medium sized towns in the Midwest had some sort of decay in the 70s. My hometown of South Bend sure did – many buildings were torn down in the name of urban renewal. The idea was that new buildings would go up in those places, but that frequently didn’t happen.
I’m not sure if that is a sign of more or less optimism than in Michigan. Here people seemed more inclined to just leave things vacant.
Sometimes that has worked well for preservation, and sometimes just delayed the inevitable.
